Clarets Trust was saddened to learn today of the death of Margaret Potts who died peacefully on Sunday aged 86. Margaret of course was the wife of the late Harry Potts, the legendary Clarets manager during our most successful period in the 1950s and 1960s Our thoughts are with all her family and friends at this sad time and we provide below a tribute from Clarets Trust Chairman, Peter Pike
Margaret Potts-A Tribute by Peter Pike On behalf of the Clarets Trust I am very sorry to hear of the death yesterday of Margaret Potts at the age of 86. Our sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to all the family at this sad time. Margaret was a Honary Member of the Clarets Trust and she wrote to me at the end of the season to vote in the Clarets Trust Player of the Year Awards. As always it was a lovely letter and she expressed regret that her vote was mainly based on press reports of the games and not through having been to the games. She said I could disqualify it if I wanted - but I did, of course, accept the vote. She was greatly interested in the success of the team and thought it was timely coming at that start of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Championship win in 1959/60. I have known Margaret for many years and she was absolutely dedicated and 100% loyal to Harry. They were a great couple - and he was a great manager. She always had a great smile and right to the end despite becoming frail over the last year her mind was as bright and sharp as ever. I was involved in helping to get the name of Brunshaw Road outside Turf Moor renamed as Harry Potts Way - the suggestion was made at a London Supporters AGM. I said we could probably do it if we just went for this initial stretch of the road - the process otherwise could have been lengthy. I was there when she cut the ribbon and the renaming took place and I know she was delighted by it. Harry had a great relationship with the players and Margaret had a great relationship with the wives and families. I know Harry never underestimated the support and encouragement given to him by Margaret. She will be sadly missed by many. Peter Pike - Chair Clarets Trust (2nd November 2009)
